Spring Cleaning Your Taxes

    Updated: Sep 27, 2021

Procrastination is a tough habit to kill. And procrastinating to deal with long overdue taxes is like a chronic disease that slowly gets worse in the background, until we find out that it has become debilitating.
Many of us have been wired to take the path of least resistance, which is to do nothing until something really bad happens. Only at that point do we deal with the problem - but in emergency mode. The question is: how do we rewire ourselves?

There are two key elements to changing our behavior: responsibility and trust. Avoiding responsibility is something we learn as children, when everything is done for us, and we grow up thinking that is the way things are. Unless of course our parents instill a sense of responsibility in us early on, by designating chores and rewarding us consistently until taking responsibility becomes a habit that will accompany us for the rest of our lives. But not all of us are so lucky. Some of us grow up in dysfunctional families where there is little focus on raising children the proper way.  They don't teach the subject of how to raise children in schools, so no point to blame parents who were struggling themselves to put bread of the table and make ends meet. Some of us grow up as "collateral damage" and we pick up life lessons based on what we're exposed to in our immediate environment. Not being equipped with this sense of responsibility will deprive us from making sound decisions in life, and this will have a serious impact on our social, financial and emotional health. But not all is lost. If our parents have not taught us certain things, but we can recognize this, it is the first step to being proactive and learn them by ourselves. Because we can. Because we are awesome. Because we are strong. Because we know it is time to grow up, eventually. It is time to TAKE RESPONSIBILITY. It starts with little things. One of them is Spring cleaning. Decluttering. And dealing with taxes.

The second key element is trust. Mainly trust in ourselves, in the system, in a friend, that we know we can count on. Trusting ourselves, being confident that WE CAN DO IT is the most desirable one, since it only depends on us - the person we have the most control over.  Trust is a precursor to success. There is NO SUCCESS without trusting there will be one. Sometimes this trust is shared between oneself and someone else. When it comes to taxes, knowing that an expert has our back will make all the difference to trust ourselves that we can deal with the problem at hand. Taxes are only scary because we don't have a clear understanding of them, or of the consequences of not taking responsibility. All those gaps of information will be filled by the experts - and suddenly, there is light at the end of the tunnel. Suddenly Spring Cleaning becomes exciting, knowing that at the end of it there will be order and peace of mind. Are you ready for YOUR SPRING CLEANING? Let's get to it!
